Rockdale County is a suburb of metro Atlanta, only 24 miles east of Atlanta. The county is the second smallest in the state, but is big in appeal to families. Within 10 years the town of Conyers grew to 1,800 residents, 40 stores, 12 saloons and five brothels. One of the most famous residents of the county, Sally Fanny Gleaton, was a leader in the battle for women’s suffrage following Reconstruction. The county was officially created in 1870 and named after Rockdale Baptist Church, which in turn, was named for the rock strata that exists underneath a large portion of the region. It is perhaps best on display at Panola Mountain State Park.
The county has been at the forefront in education reform, building new schools in the 1960s and establishing a higher pay rate for teachers than neighboring counties. A ratio of 17 students per teacher is much less than most metro counties. This progressive trend continues today in many areas of community development. Conyers has recently embarked on a plan to revitalize its historic town center, known as Olde Town, with an impressive botanical garden and streetscapes.
