To preserve the neighborhood feel of Decatur, the railroad terminus was built in the west part of the county. Terminus became Marthasville, and eventually Atlanta. Muc of the battle of Atlanta was fought in Dekalb. Until the 1960s, the county was largely agricutural, but as Atlanta grew, Dekalb became increasingly urbanized. But as with all of Georgia, trees are valued here and it shows. Parks abound throughout the county, as do colleges. The county is one of the most educated in the nation- over 80% of Dunwoody residents have a college degree, with Decatur, and Chamblee not far behind.
