At the eastern stretch of metro Atlanta is Barrow County- steeped in tradition and rich in history. This small county is situated between Atlanta and Athens but far enough away to be shielded form the traffic and congestion of either. It is a great place to start a business or raise a family.
The area was settled in the late 1700's in an area referred to as Black Gum Hollow- which became Jug Tavern- and today is known as Winder. In 1887, the Gainesville, Jefferson, and Southern Railway added stops in Bethlehem, Jug Tavern, and Mulberry. The county was officially created in 1914, carved from portions of Jackson, Gwinnett, and Walton Counties. It was named for the chancellor of the University of Georgia at that time- David Barrow, Jr. In 1931, Richard B. Russell, a local resident, was inaugurated as governor of Georgia.
The apparel company, Duckhead, established a production facility here that employed many locals and clothed the southern work force for decades � as well as our soldiers for WWII. Today, that same facility is a distribution point for Chico's- a women's clothing retailer. Other businesses include Yokohama Tires, Johns-Manville, and Harrison Poultry. The county has also developed a micro tourism industry with the opening of Chateau Elan in Braselton. This four star resort has a winery, and an award winning golf course and equestrian facilities.
Fort Yargo State Park is one of the most visited parks in the state. This 1800 acre park offers camping, fishing, swimming, and hiking- centered on the old fort built in 1792, as settlers arrived.
